Technical Information

If you are after the FREE player , go to the Real One website and then choose the correct version for your computer.

Please contact RealNetworks ( www.real.com ) if you have any installation issues. The Australian Museum cannot help you with them.

Please note, if you have the real player installed and you get errors when trying to connect to the video or audio versions, please check with your system administrator before contacting us. These movies take some time to download. Don't panic.

99% of the time the Australian Museum gets asked for help, the answer is that the system administrator has blocked this type of content to stop users listening to the radio or watching movies on the Internet.

If you are on a school network then it is almost guaranteed to be the problem.

The stories are provided in video, audio and text-only formats. To view the high quality versions of the movies you w ill need the Real Player G2 or later. and a connection speed of at least 28.8k. For better visual quality, these are presented in a 2 second per frame slideshow, not full motion video.

For the audio format, your computer should have Real Player G2 or later and a connection speed of at least 14.4k.

Text only pages use no special formatting and can be viewed in any web browser, however we suggest that you use javascript enabled versions of Netscape 3.x (or later) or Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.x (or later). Version 2 of these brands of browsers with javascript turned off will probably cause problems. You should upgrade your browser in this case.

Macintosh users will see a pop-up player, rather than an embedded movie.

Please contact us if you are having difficulties playing the media files (after discussion with your System Administrator or ISP please).
